We Label Food, Cars, and Drugs—Why Not AI?

Executives rely on labels every day. We read nutrition facts before we eat, safety ratings before we buy a car, and clinical disclosures before approving a drug. Labels don’t slow progress; they make innovation safer, scalable, and trustworthy.
Artificial intelligence, however, is being deployed across enterprises with almost none of these guardrails.
AI systems now influence credit approvals, clinical risk assessments, hiring pipelines, pricing strategies, and supply chains. Yet many leaders cannot answer basic questions about the models running their businesses: What data were they trained on? Where do they fail? Do they behave consistently across populations and conditions? What happens when the environment changes?
As AI moves from pilot projects to mission-critical infrastructure, trust can no longer rest on vendor claims or internal assurances. Boards are asking harder questions about accountability, regulatory exposure, and reputational risk. Regulators and customers are doing the same. In this context, opaque AI systems are no longer just difficult to explain; they are a business liability.
The Black-Box Problem Is Now a Board-Level Risk
For years, “black box” AI was tolerated because its impact felt indirect. That era is over. When AI affects revenue, safety, equity, or brand reputation, opacity becomes unacceptable.
Consider a familiar scenario: an organization deploys an AI tool that performs well in initial testing, only to see performance degrade months later as market conditions shift or data drift occurs. Or a model that works well on average but fails disproportionately for specific customer segments. Without systematic auditing and disclosure, these failures are often detected late after customers complain, regulators intervene, or headlines appear.
Executives are left exposed not because AI failed, but because its limitations were never made explicit.
Other high-impact technologies faced this problem before. Food manufacturers once resisted ingredient disclosure. Automakers pushed back against safety ratings. Pharmaceutical companies argued that transparency would slow innovation. In every case, standardized labeling ultimately strengthened trust, reduced risk, and created clearer accountability.
AI is approaching the same inflection point.
The question is no longer whether AI will be audited, certified, and labeled. That trajectory is already clear.
What an “AI Nutrition Label” Actually Means
An AI label is not a marketing document, a model card buried in technical documentation, or a compliance checklist completed after deployment. It is a concise, decision-grade artifact designed for executive oversight.
At a minimum, an effective AI label should answer five questions leaders care about:
- What is this system intended to do and not do?
Clear scope matters. Models often fail when used outside their intended context. - What data was it trained on?
Not every detail, but enough to understand representativeness, gaps, and known biases. - How does it perform and where does it struggle?
Aggregate accuracy is insufficient. Executives need to know failure modes, uncertainty, and variability across populations or conditions. - How is it monitored over time?
AI performance is not static. Labels should disclose how drift, degradation, and retraining are handled. - Who is accountable?
Ownership, escalation paths, and audit responsibility must be explicit.
Think of this as the equivalent of calories, ingredients, and safety warnings, not a full recipe, but enough to make an informed decision.
AI becomes governable only when audits are translated into standardized system cards that executives can read, compare, and act on.
From Compliance Theater to Trust Infrastructure
Many organizations already perform some form of AI review, often driven by legal or compliance teams. The problem is that these efforts are frequently fragmented, reactive, and disconnected from executive decision-making.
An AI label shifts the focus from box-checking to operational trust. It creates a shared language across technical teams, risk officers, legal counsel, and the C-suite. It allows leaders to compare systems, assess trade-offs, and make informed deployment decisions before issues arise.
Importantly, labeling does not require waiting for regulators to dictate standards. Forward-looking organizations are already defining certification thresholds for high-impact AI, much like financial controls evolved before external regulation caught up.
This proactive approach pays dividends. When regulators, auditors, or customers ask questions, labeled systems are easier to defend. When incidents occur, accountability is clearer. And when trust is visible, adoption accelerates rather than stalls.
Why This Is a Competitive Advantage
Transparency is often framed as a cost. In reality, it is becoming a differentiator.
Enterprises that can clearly articulate how their AI systems work and where they don’t are better positioned to scale responsibly. They earn trust faster, navigate regulatory scrutiny more smoothly, and reduce the risk of sudden reversals caused by public or internal backlash.
Just as importantly, AI labels improve the quality of internal decisions. Executives are no longer forced to choose between blind trust and blanket skepticism. They gain a structured way to ask the right questions and demand meaningful answers.
The organizations that win the next phase of AI adoption will not be those that deploy the fastest, but those that deploy with confidence.
The Question Leaders Should Be Asking Now
The question is no longer whether AI will be audited, certified, and labeled. That trajectory is already clear. The real question is whether organizations will shape these practices themselves or wait for failures and regulations to force their hand.
We label food, cars, and drugs because the stakes are high. AI has quietly joined that category.
For today’s leaders, the choice is simple: continue deploying systems you cannot fully explain, or demand labels that turn opacity into oversight and trust into strategy.
